Wedding cakes - one area where you should NOT get carried away with the details.
If you have been doing some research on wedding cakes you already know that the subject gets needlessly complex quickly.
You can spend a lot of time learning about the types and composition of icing and the expense of certain designs on the cake and how you should have this color for winter weddings and this or that flavor if you're wedding is in the South and something else if you're in Colorado and...
Time out! Do they have timeouts on websites? I guess we just did. Okay, enough of us talking to ourselves...
NOTE: For our index of wedding cake text and picture pages, scroll to the bottom half of this page.
Here's the deal. Wedding cakes serve a few simple but important purposes.
- They are in LOTS of pictures
- They are in LOTS of bellies by night's end
- They are on yours and your spouse's face at the cake cutting (forget decorum, just smear it on - that's what everyone wants to see anyway. Have some fun!)
So what kind of cake do we need to carry out this mission? One that:
- Looks good for the pictures
- Tastes good for the bellies (have enough for all those bellies and some extra for the relatives that haven't been eating much all week so they could stock up at the free meal - your reception)
- Cleans off of your face easily (just kidding)
For the "looks" aspect of wedding cakes:
Cake designs can be made to fit almost any budget with a few adjustments.
Depending on how your brain works, you can choose your cake design in one of two ways:
Either go to our cake design page for tips on everything from shapes to colors to tiers and how to afford the design you want regardless of budget or...head on over to the cake photo gallery. or the cake ideas page. If you see something you like, go to the cake designs page to see how to have your cake and eat it too (roughly translated - how to have what you want and stay on budget.)
Find some ideas for displaying your cake at the reception.
If you want to try some more unusual styles like chocolate cakes, cupcake wedding cakes, or beach wedding cakes, check out the references on this page about unique cakes.
Top it off with a discussion of the cake topper and pictures of custom monogram cake toppers, a great trend that offers total customization for the same or less than many traditional wedding cake toppers.
You can take this idea one step further with custom wedding logo designs that can be used across your wedding in save-the-date cards or magnets, invitations, thank you notes, favor tags, or favor labels.
In the "taste" department:
Find your options and a couple of ideas for icing and flavors at the cake ideas page. Find out how to have enough cake for all the aforementioned bellies and still afford the design you want at our cake design page.
Figure out how to feed all those bellies at the cake accessories page.
Decide how you will "smear cake and frosting all over your new spouse's face" for the camera.
Don't forget the groom's cake. It gives you a chance to get creative and add another flavor as well.
